Memorial ceremony in Liège, November 13, 2023
On November 13, 2023, the Belgian association "Fraternité de l'Europe et du Monde", chaired by Serge Delvenne, organized a ceremony to mark the 105th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The Russian ambassador to Belgium, A.A.Tokovinin, took part in the ceremony and laid a wreath on the graves of Russian soldiers.
In his speech, A.A.Tokovinin stressed the importance of preserving historical memory and informing the younger generation, preventing the falsification of facts concerning the two world conflicts. "This cemetery is a symbol of the fighting fraternity that marked the First and Second World Wars. We are delighted that, for the second year running, our Belgian friends have taken the initiative to organize a joint ceremony with the singing of the anthems of Russia and Belgium on the anniversary of the conclusion of the Compiègne Armistice," said the head of the diplomatic mission in an interview with Russian media.
Rossotrudnichestvo's representative in Belgium, Vera Bunina, the Russian Orthodox Church's Archbishop of Brussels and Belgium, Simon, and Russian compatriots attended the event. A liturgy was served.
Ann Morelli, Professor Emeritus of History at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, attended the ceremony. She emphasized the need to present historical events correctly, including the decisive contribution of the USSR to the victory over Nazism. She stressed that it was the Soviet people who suffered the greatest losses during the Second World War. "I remember that, under the leadership of Major General F.M. Krasavin, seven thousand Auschwitz survivors were liberated on January 27, 1945," said Morelli.
